Geoinformatics is a discipline with the need to extract, collect or analyze geographical features using the favor of computer. To perform spatial analysis, computer is a must to have, as necessary as great softwares. Thanks to the born and the advancement of technology, now we can get an affordable yet qualified computer to do the analysis. The geoinformatics software? Well.. You can have a really good one, but you have to dig your pocket really deep. If you can’t afford much, then I can suggest you to use the freewares. There are many institutions in the world provide you all these softwares, you just need to google it. (more…)

Straddling two environments — land and sea — the frontal edge of the mangrove stand is characterized by thick vegetation, tangled roots and glutinous mud.
The soil is periodically waterlogged, rich in organic matter and therefore low in oxygen. Water and nutrients are abundant, but the water is salty. It is called the waterlogged forest.

Pertama kali saya mendapatkan mata kuliah remote sensing atau penginderaan jauh, saya ingat bagaimana definisi dari Lillesand dan Kiefer digunakan sebagai satu kalimat sakti. Kenapa bisa menjadi satu kalimat sakti? Karena hampir semua publikasi ilmiah (skripsi, tesis, disertasi hingga jurnal) di Indonesia menggunakan definisi beliau berdua ini. Definisi dari mereka berdua yaitu kira-kira bahwa penginderaan jauh adalah ilmu dan seni untuk mendapatkan informasi permukaan bumi tanpa harus menyentuh obyeknya.

Indonesian’s coral reefs have known have the highest coral diversity in the world with 18% of world’s coral reefs situated in this area. Unfortunately, destructive fishing, overfishing, sedimentation, pollution have put these resources in a great danger that lead to major degradation. (more…)
